Social Media Aspect Ratio Guide
Everything you need to know about exact image and video sizes for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, and more.
Feed Posts (1:1, 4:5, 1.91:1)
Square (1080×1080) and portrait (1080×1350) are best. Portrait takes up the most screen space. Landscape (1080×566) is also supported.
Stories & Reels (9:16)
Full screen vertical (1080×1920) is required. Keep important text away from the top and bottom to avoid UI overlap.
TikTok
Videos (9:16)
1080×1920 is the standard. Like Reels, keep text in the 'safe zone' in the center of the screen to avoid the right-side buttons and bottom caption.
YouTube
Standard Videos (16:9)
Standard widescreen videos should be 1920×1080 (Full HD) or 3840×2160 (4K).
YouTube Shorts (9:16)
Shorts use the standard vertical format (1080×1920). They must be under 60 seconds.
Feed Posts
Facebook supports almost everything, but 1:1 (square), 4:5 (portrait), and 16:9 (landscape) perform best in the feed.
Stories & Reels (9:16)
Identical to Instagram (1080×1920). They are often cross-posted.
X (Twitter)
Images
16:9 (1200×675) is the traditional standard, but 1:1 and native 3:4 are increasingly popular for maximizing feed space.
Videos
Supports 16:9, 1:1, and 9:16. Square (1:1) often gets highest engagement on mobile devices.
Image Posts
1:1 (square) or 4:5 (portrait) are highly recommended. Link preview images are 1.91:1 (1200×627).
Video Posts
1:1 and 16:9 are standard. 9:16 is supported but often gets pillarboxed on desktop.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best format for mobile social media?
Whenever possible, use vertical formats (4:5 or 9:16). They take up more space on mobile screens, leading to higher engagement and view times.
Can I use the same video for TikTok, Shorts, and Reels?
Yes! All three platforms use the 9:16 aspect ratio (1080×1920). Just be careful to keep text in the center 'safe zone' so it doesn't get covered by the different UI buttons on each app.
What happens if I use the wrong aspect ratio?
The platform will usually crop your image/video automatically (often cutting off important parts) or add ugly black bars (pillarboxing/letterboxing) to make it fit.
